TARCOG is an association of local governments in a five county area, consisting of DeKalb, Jackson, Limestone, Madison and Marshall Counties. TARCOG works to coordinate with municipal, county, state and federal government agencies to improve the quality of life for the regionÍs residents. The services are in three general areas - the Area Agency on Aging, Economic Development and Planning.

As the regionÍs Area Agency on Aging (AAA), TARCOG provides many services to the region's elderly population. The AAA works with federal, state and local officials, elderly constituents, service providers, and volunteer groups to coordinate existing services and develop new services to help the elderly.

Economic Development provides many services to local governments in the region, including assistance with community development, job creation, and infrastructure financing. Planning provides local government services in zoning, mapping, local and strategic planning and related functions. Rural transportation planning is provided to the areas outside the metropolitan planning service area.
